Investigations & Criminal
Enforcement (ICE)
Overview
Established in 1981, Investigations & Criminal Enforcement (ICE)
is empowered to conduct criminal investigations involving crimes
affecting the Department. Crimes investigated fall into
categories of Workers’ Compensation fraud, threats involving
Department resources and personnel, internal breaches of program
integrity, Unemployment Insurance claimant and employer fraud,
and fraud against other programs including the explosives
section and petroleum storage tanks section.
Fraud costs everybody when any kind of claim - unemployment
insurance, workers' compensation insurance, etc. - is paid on
fraudulent information. As a result, employers and workers in
the State of Colorado face loss of wages and jobs, lower
profits, and higher costs for goods, services, and premiums.
Prevention and detection are crucial to minimize the effects of
fraud on these programs and thus protect the assets of the
citizens of the State of Colorado.
Court Ordered Restitution to the Colorado
Department of Labor and Employment, resulting from criminal
convictions in fraud cases amounts to $8,486,119.70.
Most of those convicted make regular payments through the
district courts' registry offices.
