QUARTERLY
Quarterly, TCPU employment rose 1.9% adding 2579 employees. The largest component of the TCPU industry is Communications (48), and this quarter it experienced the largest sector gain increasing by 1569. Within Communications, Telephone Communications added 1099 employees from expansions in cellular and radiotelephone services. Nonvocal message communications, which covers electronic mail and facsimile transmission services, added 500 employees. Despite the closure of a large long distance freight company Trucking-Warehousing (42) added 508. Prime moving time seasonally advanced employment in local trucking offsetting the loss. Air Transportation (45) expanded by 488 employees. Scheduled air transportation increased its presence at Denver International Airport adding 275 employees. Air courier services added 242 due to extra hiring to cover summer vacations and preseason training for the Christmas rush. Local Transportation (41) declined over the quarter losing 259 employees. Cutbacks at a major ambulance contractor, an ambulance service transfer to local government and seasonal service cutbacks in ski areas contributed to the decline.
ANNUAL
TCPU employment grew 8.6% since third quarter a year ago adding 10,893 employees to its rolls. Communications (48) generated about three fourths of the industry growth adding 8242 employees. SIC changes of about 4100 in January influenced the gain and the remaining growth resulted from expanded hiring mainly in Telephone Communications and nonvocal message communications services. Employment in Air Transportation (45) jumped by 1845. Scheduled Air Transportation expanded by 1398 employees, Air Courier Services by 129. The healthy economy has positively impacted travel and airfreight activity creating expansions at business working out of Denver International Airport. Transport Services (47) reported a gain of 670 employees. Most of the increase is a result of SIC changes in January moving about 550 from Services. Losses were minimal with the largest of the three sector declines occurring in Local Transportation (41) down 124 employees. Ambulance service cutbacks, decreased school busing for summer activities, and cessation of coverage for some taxi businesses contributed to the decline. Transport to casino destinations increased offsetting losses.
