Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Unemployment Compensation Update—March 27, 2009 EXTENSION OF EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION The federal government provides up to 13 additional weeks of Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits for states that reach a total three-month average unemployment rate greater than 6 percent. Colorado has reached a three-month (December, January, and February) average unemployment rate greater than 6 percent and Colorado claimants now qualify for 13 additional weeks of EUC benefits. The first payable week for this EUC extension is the week ending April 18, 2009. If you are currently filing for EUC benefits, continue to file via the Colorado Unemployment Benefits line (CUBLine) or CUBLine Online. If you need to file for EUC or reopen an existing EUC claim, you may visit the EUC Online Application. The EUC Online Application is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Unemployment Insurance (UI) Program will contact all potentially eligible individuals with more information.
Emergency unemployment compensation online application
When the benefits on your regular UI claim exhaust or your claim expires, you will receive notification advising you to file an initial application for Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC). Visit the EUC Online Application to file an initial EUC application or reopen an existing EUC claim. The EUC Online Application is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You may also call the Customer Contact Center at 303-318-9000 (Denver-metro area) or 1-800-388-5515 (outside Denver-metro area) to file an initial application or reopen an existing EUC claim. Because of the high volume of regular UI claims and EUC claims, you may experience long wait times when calling the Customer Contact Center and are encouraged to use the EUC Online Application. EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION BENEFITS On June 27, 2008, the U.S. Congress passed EUC legislation providing up to 13 weeks of additional UI benefits for eligible, unemployed or partially unemployed individuals for weeks beginning on or after July 6, 2008. The President signed EUC into law on June 30, 2008. Governor Ritter signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor to enact EUC in Colorado. On November 21, 2008, President Bush signed legislation authorizing an additional seven weeks of EUC payments. The first payable week for this EUC extension is the week of November 23–29, 2008. This newly enacted legislation does not authorize extended EUC benefit payments prior to this date.
