On a quarterly basis, Services experienced the largest industry gain adding 7660 employees for an increase of 1.2%. The largest sector gain occurred in Amusement & Recreation (79), which seasonally increased by 6261 employees. Hiring for the peak of the ski season created most of the gain although one new large gambling casino added 319. Personal Services (72) generated the second largest sector gain adding 1326 employees. Increases were due to seasonal hiring for tax preparation. Hotels & Lodging (70) gained 984 employees. Gains occurred outside the Denver Metro area providing seasonal accommodations for ski areas. Social Services (83) added 372 employees. Most growth occurred in Residential Care due to staff expansions and the opening of new group homes and assisted living facilities. Employment in Membership Organizations (86) seasonally rose by 338 employees due to the National Western Stock Show. Business services (73) suffered the largest loss dropping by 1482 employees. Gains of over 6000 in Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Related Services were offset by losses of 4887 in Personnel Supply Services and 1894 in Misc Business Services. ANNUAL
The Services industry added 27,489 employees, increasing by 4.5% over a year ago. Business Services (73) generated more than half of the industry increase with 16,708 new employees. Where temporary help agencies had driven this sector in past years Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Related Services now holds the lion’s share of the employment. Annual growth for this subsector was 12,865. Temporary help and placement services rose by 3323 employees. Engineering Services (87) gained 4565. Increased business in Engineering Services added 2528. Management, Consulting and Public Relations services rose by 1516. Social Services (83) added 1989 employees. The opening of a number of assisted care facilities and expansions of group homes generated more than half of the sector addition causing Residential Care to increase by 1081. Annual losses occurred in three sectors, the largest in Hotels & Lodging (70). Employment fell by 792 due to larger than normal seasonal layoffs in Metro Denver and slightly lower seasonal hiring for lodging in ski areas. Employment, which fluctuates wildly in Motion Pictures (78) because it contains casting bureaus, fell by 184. Private Households (88) decreased by 106.
1999 SIC CHANGES Services lost approximately 836 employees and gained $75,987 in quarterly payroll as a result of reclassification.
