QUARTERLY
First quarter SIC changes did not pervade the industry this year allowing Wholesale to report an expansion of 279 employees over last quarter up 0.3%. Durable Goods (50) employment rose by 700. The greatest change in a subsector occurred in the distribution of Electrical Goods, which increased by 522 employees. Electronic Parts & Equipment within Electrical Goods generated most of the growth adding 477 employees. About 150 employees were moved into this category due to SIC changes and the remainder of the increase resulted from expansions at a number of firms. Machinery Equipment & Supplies grew by 171 the result of SIC changes into Industrial Machinery & Equipment. Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies added 170 employees with most of its gain due to expansions in the distribution of computer and peripheral equipment and software. Losses of 181 occurred in Lumber & Other Construction Materials due to a large SIC change moving one employer to Manufacturing.
Nondurable Goods (51) fell by 402 employees. Groceries & Related Products reported the largest quarterly change dropping by 343. Closure of a wholesale distribution operation accounted for a loss of about 100. Small cutbacks in a number of firms accounted for another 140 and seasonal cutbacks in the distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables accounted for a loss of 118. Misc Nondurable Goods added 86 employees. Seasonal hiring in the distribution of farm supplies and flowers and nursery stock generated most of the gain.
ANNUAL
Wholesale employment was up 3.3% having added 3449 employees. Durable Goods (50) experienced the major share of annual growth gaining 3086 employees. Its strongest components were Electrical Goods up 1332, Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies up 579 and Machinery, Equipment & Supplies up 488. All increase resulted from yearlong expansions emphasizing the distribution of electronic equipment and parts for the communications industry and distribution of computer and related products and industrial machinery and equipment.
Nondurable Goods (51) gained 362 employees. Drugs, Drug Proprietaries & Druggists’ Sundries expanded over the year adding 308 employees. Beer, Wine & Distilled Alcoholic Beverages grew by 123. Employees hired to cover a strike and not laid off and expansions caused the gain.

Due to reclassification this industry lost approximately 79 employees and gained $2,770,856 in quarter
