QUARTERLY

The Services industry continued to perform well adding 10,594 employees over last quarter for a growth of 2.2%. Seasonal increases for skiing and a SIC change adding about 1100 from Hotels & Lodging (70) caused Amusement & Recreation to add 6051 employees. Hotels & Lodging added 1526 employees. Increases are seasonal but down from previous years because of the large SIC change to Amusement & Recreation. Seasonal activity in tax preparation added most of the 1499 employees to Personal Services (72). Social Services (83) added 1023 employees. About 300 were added from SIC changes and the remainder of the increase resulted from staff expansions at a large number of businesses. Business Services (73) which covers temporary help agencies suffered the biggest loss down 1468 workers. Slowness is typical for this sector in first quarter.

ANNUAL

Since first quarter a year ago Services added 32,622 employees for a gain of 7%. The trend toward leasing employees, subcontracting computer services and using temporary help for high times assisted in the huge growth of Business Services (73) up 12,051 employees. Health Services (80) added 5573 employees. Growth occurred in most subsectors, however, the increase in Hospitals (806) can be attributed to the privatization of a local government operated hospital in May of 1994 affecting about 1600 employees. Amusement & Recreation (79) grew 3431 employees. The addition of about 1100 employees from SIC changes aided the increase. Gambling, reported under Coin- Operated Amusement Devices (7993), grew about 450 employees over last year.

1994 SIC CHANGES

Services lost approximately 496 employees and $7,341,522 in quarterly payroll due to reclassification.
