QUARTERLY
An extremely large increase in employment occurred this quarter in TCPU with the addition of 6195 employees for a gain of 5.9%. The single biggest factor affecting the increase was the SIC reclassification of about 6000 from Manufacturing to Electric-Gas-Sanitary Services (49) specifically, Sanitary Services (495), because of reclamation activity. Overall, Electric-Gas-Sanitary Services reflected an increase of 5140 employees over last quarter. Layoffs in Combination Electric & Gas & Other Public Utilities (493) offset some of the sector gain from the SIC change. Communication (48) added 1269 employees. About 225 employees were added because of SIC changes and the rest of the increase can be attributed to growth. Trucking- Warehousing (42) down 855 employees experienced a typical seasonal decline.
ANNUAL
TCPU employment rose drastically over a year ago. The industry gained 8208 employees, an annual jump of 8%. Electric-Gas-Sanitary Services (49) contained better than half of the increase up 4501 employees. SIC changes from Manufacturing covering about 6000 employees and layoffs affecting about 450 influenced the large change in this sector. Communication (48) added 4400 employees. Yearlong expansions accounted for most of the increase. Business growth in Trucking-Warehousing (42) added 2175 employees. Cutbacks in service, layoffs and out of state transfers by a large carrier starting first quarter of 1994 caused decreases in the sector.
1994 SIC CHANGES
TCPU gained approximately 5974 employees and $77,103,127 in quarterly payroll due to reclassification.
