Wholesale Trade rose slightly over last quarter adding 659 employees for a gain of 0.7%. Sector activity was mixed as Durable Goods (50) added 728 employees and Nondurable Goods (51) lost 69. Increases in Durable Goods were greatest in Electric Goods (506) which generated better than half of the growth, up 383 employees. Some short term increases, long term expansions and the acquisition of about 174 from Manufacturing SIC changes accounted for the increase. Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies (504) which had consistently shown quarterly growth added only 27 employees this quarter. The slowing of employment growth in this subsector can be attributed to losses of about 170 due to SIC changes.
Despite the loss in Nondurable Goods the sector acquired around 360 employees due to SIC changes from other industries. Seasonal losses that typically run about 300 in Groceries & Related Products (514) offset these SIC gains. Closures and slowings in Farm-Product Raw Materials (515) down 41 and cutbacks and inaccurate over-reporting fourth quarter in Petroleum & Petroleum Products (517) down 57 also contributed to the downturn in Nondurable Goods.
ANNUAL
Since first quarter a year ago Wholesale Trade has grown 5410 employees for a gain of 6.1%. Durable Goods (50) expanded 3796 employees. Electric Goods (506) gained the largest number of new employees, up 1082. Growth took place over the year but was enhanced by the addition of 174 from Manufacturing SIC changes this quarter. Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies (504) also registered strong growth up 716 employees due to yearlong expansions
Nondurable Goods (51) added 1614 employees. Groceries & Related Products (514) up 577 employees and Misc Nondurable Goods (519) up 574 generated the largest share of the increase. Increases in Groceries & Related Products were helped by SIC changes into the sector. Strong seasonal expansions in florist, nursery and farm supplies occurred in Misc Nondurables.
1994 SIC CHANGES
Wholesale gained approximately 390 employees and $6,185,211 in quarterly payroll due to reclassification.
