Government employment declined 2.0% over last quarter losing 5869 employees. Both State and Federal government employment dropped while Local government grew. State government decreased by 4976 employees. Losses were almost exclusively relegated to Educational Services (82) as work study students were backed out of employment statistics starting this quarter. Of note this quarter is the change in county distribution for the Department of Highways. New reporting procedures caused many to be reassigned by place of reporting rather than place of work. Losses in Federal government down 1435 employees were primarily seasonal due to post office layoffs following the Christmas rush and weather related cutbacks in Soil Conservation and Forest Service. Closure of the Resolution Trust Corporation cut 136 from Federal employment and Bureau of Mines layoffs cut 171. Small cutbacks can be seen at some Fitzsimons locations as it readies for closure. Local government added 541 employees. Most of the increase occurred in Educational Services.
