QUARTERLY

Employment in Wholesale Trade dropped 1.3% over last quarter down 1296. Of the two sectors within Wholesale, Durable Goods (50) recorded the largest decline dropping 1193. Virtually all subsectors of Durable Goods were effected by SIC changes. Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies (504) lost 726 employees with approximately 685 of the loss attributed to SIC changes. A large portion of the changes occurred in Computer & Computer Peripheral Equipment & Software (5045) as many were reclassified to Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Computer Related Services (737). Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (508) had the second largest drop down 488. Losses were also related to SIC changes with most moving to other categories within Wholesale Trade.

Nondurable Goods (51) dropped 104 employees. Groceries & Related Products (514) incurred the largest employment drop down 338. Losses were primarily seasonal as most agriculture areas completed produce sorting and distribution. Drugs, Drug Proprietaries & Druggist Sundries (512) showed the largest gain up 132. Increases were a mix of SIC changes and expansions.

ANNUAL

Over the year Wholesale Trade grew 2.0 % adding 1920 employees. Durable Goods (50) added 730 employees and Nondurables 1189. The largest increases in Durable Goods occurred in Electrical Goods (506), Lumber & Other Construction Materials (503) and Motor Vehicle & Motor Vehicle Parts & Supplies (501). Respectively, employment increases were 439, 387 and 295. Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies (504) had the largest decrease. Many SIC changes out of the subsector this quarter effected the loss of 295.

All subsectors of Nondurable Goods increased except for Petroleum & Petroleum Products (517), which dropped 10 employees. Groceries & Related Products (514) showed the greatest strength up 416. Better than half of its gain was due to expansions occurring in Groceries & Related Products Not Elsewhere Classified (5149).

1995 SIC CHANGES

Reclassification caused this industry to lose approximately 1139 employees and quarterly payroll of $13,076,578.
