Government employment declined 0.6% over last quarter losing 1717 employees. Employment in both State government and Federal government fell, however, Local government added 117. Gains in Local government resulted from increased staffing in three of the larger school districts. State government fell by 1097 employees. The bulk of the loss was in education due to reporting changes at one university. Professors teaching more than one class were counted for each class taught. This reporting error was rectified with the result being a drop of about 1200. General Government (91) rose slightly with the addition of about 100 employees from the new reporting of UI covered employees at the General Assembly. Federal government dropped by 737 employees. Losses were seasonal as about 450 were cut following the postal service Christmas rush and National Park Service dropped about 150 for the winter.
ANNUAL
Employment in Government grew 1.2% adding 3586 over last year. Annual growth was confined to Local government with losses occurring in both State and Federal government. Federal government fell 1080 employees. Cutbacks at the Bureau of Land Management, National Parks, Department of Energy and Fitzsimons Medical Hospital along with the closure of the Resolution Trust Corp contributed to the decline. State government dropped by 687 employees. Reporting changes undertaken by the University of Colorado contributed to the losses in education down 760 and health services down 557. State losses were offset by the addition of General Assembly employees and expansions in the Department of Corrections and Division of Youth Services.
