QUARTERLY

Growth in Manufacturing was slow this quarter adding only 396 employees up 0.2% over last quarter. Non-Electrical Machinery (35) reported the largest sector increase gaining 994. About 700 employees were added due to SIC changes with about 450 from one business previously in Electrical Machinery (36). The second largest sector increase occurred in Electrical Machinery (36) up 248 employees. Despite the loss of 450 to Non-Electrical Machinery and the gain of 300 from Communications the overall impact of SIC changes is the addition of 75 employees. Expansions primarily in the production of Communications Equipment (366) generated the remainder of the subsector growth. Transportation Equipment (37) added 241 employees. The increase was the result of growth in two companies in Motor Vehicle & Equipment (371) and reporting changes by one firm in Guided Missiles & Space Vehicles (376). Food Products (20) declined by 382 employees. The decline was seasonal encompassing the end of the sugar beet processing cycle and Christmas candy production. Instruments (38) lost 331 employees from SIC changes to Engineering (87).

ANNUAL

Within Non-Electrical Machinery, Computer & Office Equipment (357) reported the greatest gain up 730 employees. A hefty proportion of the gain was the result of SIC changes. Transportation Equipment (37), up by 1366, had the second largest sector gain. Gains occurred primarily over the last two quarters and were the result of expansions by two companies and reporting changes by one large company. Electrical Machinery (36) added 570 employees. The majority of the sector increase occurred in Communications Equipment due to expansions and SIC changes. Food Products (20) reported a drop of 484 employees. Closure of a meat production plant in mid-year and outsourcing of work by a beverage manufacturer created most of the loss. Leather (31) experienced the second greatest decrease dropping by 132 employees. Losses were confined to one company and the result of layoffs occurring this quarter.
