QUARTERLY

Services employment increased 1.4% over last quarter adding 7834 employees. Increases in some sectors, such as Amusement & Recreation (79) and Hotels & Lodging (70), were related to staffing for the ski season. Since last quarter and into the height of the ski season employment in Amusement & Recreation rose by 4962 and Hotels & Lodging 1653. Personal Services (72) gained 1255 workers. Gains were also seasonal but tied to income tax preparation. Business Services (73) added 1234 employees. Gains were strongest in Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Computer Related Services (737) up 1799 followed by Misc Business Services (738) up 707. Engineering Services (87) reported the largest employment decline dropping by 1731 employees. This sector lost around 2600 employees to SIC changes with the majority of the change leaving Management & Public Relations (874) and Research, Development & Testing Services (873). Expansions in Engineering Services (871) and seasonal increases for tax filing time in Accounting, Auditing & Bookkeeping (872) offset losses. Motion Pictures (78) had the second largest employment drop, down 728 due to project completions.


ANNUAL

Services added 29,598 employees over a year ago, up 5.7%. Better than half of the industry growth occurred in Business Services (73) up 17,385. Within Business Services, Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Computer Related Services (737) added 6062 employees; Personnel Services (736) which includes temporary help agencies added 5801; and Misc Business Services (738) which includes telemarketing added 3923. All three subsectors experienced yearlong expansions. Health Services (80) generated the second largest gain up 4445 employees. Employment gains were greatest in doctors offices and nursing care. Social Services (83) added 1986 employees over a year ago with better than half of the gain occurring in Individual & Family Social Services (832). This subsector contains nonmedical homemaker services which has incurred increased demand. Misc Services (89) down 177 employees and Misc Repair Services (76) down 44 were the only sectors to decrease. Losses in both sectors were attributed to SIC changes.

1996 SIC CHANGES

Services lost approximately 2779 employees and $23,188,735 in quarterly payroll due to reclassification.
