QUARTERLY

Mining employment fell slightly losing 79 employees from the previous quarter dropping 0.6%. Sector activity was mixed with Oil & Gas Extraction (13) gaining employment and all other sectors experiencing losses. Oil & Gas Extraction added 91 employees. A number of short-term projects beginning in March in crude petroleum and natural gas operating properties accounted for most of the gain. Small projects also starting up in March in Oil & Gas Field Services added almost 20 employees. Coal Mining (12) suffered the largest quarterly loss dropping by 67 employees. The cessation of an operating contract and subsequent takeover by owners resulted in a cutback of about 30 employees. Some seasonal slowing occurred over the quarter. Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) decreased by 59 employees. Losses were seasonal as cold weather slowed demand for sand and gravel pit operation and rock crushing. Metal Mining (10) employment fell by 45. Project completions and small layoffs generated the decline.

ANNUAL

The Mining industry added 497 employees up 3.7%. Growth in Mining was reflected in the addition of 369 employees to Oil & Gas Extraction. Gains were exclusive to Oil & Gas Field Services which covers the performance of services such as well logging, sampling, surveying and acidizing for others on a contract or fee basis. Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) added 185 employees. Its strongest subsector was Sand & Gravel (144). Increased business expansions in the operation of sand and gravel pits and the preparation of sand and gravel for construction, along with the addition of about 40 from SIC changes pushed employment up. Metal Mining (10) reported an annual loss of 31. Activity within the sector, however, was very jumbled. Gold & Silver experienced a large layoff dropping 119 employees and Metal Mining Services slipped by 64 due to SIC changes. Misc Metal Ores rose by 84 due to expansions, as did Ferroalloy Ores up by 47. Coal Mining (12) reported the smallest annual change dropping by 27 due to project completions in contract coal mining services.

1997 SIC CHANGES

Mining gained approximately 115 employees and $2,983,893 in quarterly payroll as a result of reclassification.
