Since last quarter the Services industry added 4067 workers for a gain of 0.7%. Growth this quarter was sluggish. Amusement & Recreation (79), however, followed seasonal trends adding 5151 for the ski season. Hotels & Lodging (70) also increased seasonally due to the ski season and added 1659 employees. Personal Services (72) added 1458 employees. Gains in this sector are typical at this time of year as tax preparation services staff up for the tax season. Business Services (73) dropped by 4191 employees. Losses in this sector are rare and usually occur in fourth quarter. Significant declines in placement through temporary help agencies caused a loss of 7009 employees with distribution evenly spread between Metro Denver and Balance of State. Losses were offset somewhat by gains in Computer Programming & Computer Related Services up 1412 and Misc Business Services up 1632. Health Services (80) dropped by 908 employees. Home care closures, hospital cutbacks and decreased service in the provision of home health care contributed to the drop in Health Services.
ANNUAL
Annually, Services added 38,446 employees up 7% with all sectors increasing. Despite the puny activity in Business Services (73) over the quarter, on an annual basis employment rose by 16,058. Major expansions in computer programming and related services added 6445, and Misc Business Services, which contains telemarketing, added 3313. Increased demand for temporary help also contributed to the rise in Business Services adding over 3600 employees. Engineering Services (87) generated the second largest annual gain up 4205 employees. Growth resulted from yearlong expansions in engineering services and management consulting. Health Services (80) added 3107 employees. All subsectors except Doctors of Osteopathy gained employees over the year. Doctors of Medicine experienced the largest subsector growth up 1287. Losses in Doctors of Osteopathy, down 14, occurred due to SIC changes and the acquisition of a number of small practices by clinics currently coded as Offices and Clinics of Doctors of Medicine.
