The Services industry realized the largest quarterly industry gain adding 6070 employees rising 1.0%. The largest sector gain occurred in Amusement & Recreation (79), which seasonally increased by 6226 employees. Hiring for the peak of the ski season created most of the gain although one new large gambling casino added 450. The second largest sector increase occurred in Hotels & Lodging (70) up 1927. Gains here were also seasonal and tied to support of the ski industry. Seasonal hiring for tax preparation constituted most of the increase occurring in Personal Services (72) up 1621 employees over the quarter. Employment in Engineering Services (87) rose by 1215. Increases abounded due to temporary expansions in accounting firms to cover extra work related to tax filing. Significant declines occurred in Business Services (73), which fell by 5643 employees. Cutbacks in temporary help agencies following the holiday season typically affect this sector and reported a loss this quarter of 4109. SIC changes however also impacted the sector with about 4500 leaving Misc Business Services. Computer Services added almost 3300 with about 750 from SIC changes. ANNUAL
Annually, the Services industry added 22,654 employees up 3.9%. Slightly more than one third of the industry growth occurred in Business Services (73) up 8597 employees, but having lost over 4000 employees due to SIC changes this quarter, annual gains have been mitigated. Within Business Services, Computer Services saw the largest gain up 10,555 employees and Misc Business Services hurt by SIC changes reported the largest drop down 2807. Engineering Services (87) gained 5012 employees over the year. Facilities Support showed the strongest increases up 2123 due to expansions in an out-of-state program and the opening of two private correctional facilities in rural Colorado. Amusement & Recreation (79) grew by 1836 over the year. Most of the growth occurred in expansions of physical fitness centers and casinos. Social Services (83) added 1594 employees. Over the year expansions in Child Care added 672 and service increases for homemaker services contributed to the rise of 647 in Family and Individual Social Services.
