QUARTERLY
TCPU continued its climb adding 4334 employees over the quarter for a 3.4% gain. The Communications (48) sector gained an inordinate number of employees, up 5052. Over 4100 employees were added due to SIC changes with about 3150 from two worksites reclassified from Services (73). Expansions by an upstart company added another 275. Transport Services (47) grew by 513 employees. Increases were entirely defined by SIC changes into the sector. The largest change resulted from the reclassification of a packing company covering almost 600 from Business Services within the Service industry. Seasonal hiring for transport to and around skiing destinations added 128 to Local Transportation (41). Employment in Air Transportation (45) fell by 670. Seasonal expansions in airport and terminal services and air transportation were offset by seasonal cutbacks in air courier services. Air courier services typically declines following the Christmas mailing rush while air transportation increases due to the ski season. Employment in Trucking-Warehousing (42) declined by 659. Losses were typical reflecting a drop that follows the Christmas season. ANNUAL
TCPU experienced its largest annual increase ever recorded gaining 11,768 employees jumping 9.7%. Almost 40% of the gain, though, occurred as a result of SIC changes and not industry growth. Communications (48) realized the largest sector change increasing by 9841 employees. Almost 5100 of the change resulted from SIC changes. The remainder of the employment gain came from over the year growth in telephone communications and cable and other pay television. Air Transportation (45) added 749. Most of the gain occurred in scheduled air transportation as some of the larger carriers expanded service and one company took on some of its contracted employees. Transport Services (47) reported an increase of 655 employees. The bulk of the increase occurred this quarter as a result of SIC changes into the subsector, Misc Services Incidental to Transportation. Trucking-Warehousing (42) grew by 513. Throughout the year both trucking and warehousing & storage expanded each adding over 200 employees. Local Transportation (41) was the larger of two subsectors to decline over the year. Employment fell by 210 due to a SIC change to Services. Water Transportation (44) lost only one employee.
1998 SIC CHANGES
Due to reclassification this industry gained approximately 4629 employees and $24,013,757 in quarterly payroll.
