Federal employment recorded its largest increase in employment since 1993. The increase was entirely due to the 2000 census, which added 1,350 jobs on an annual average basis. Federal employment increased by 540 jobs to 54,705. The average Federal wage increased by 6.9 percent to $47,170.
The U.S. Postal Service reversed a long running growth trend with a 69-job loss to average 15,289. The average Postal wage increased by 4.7 percent to $42,291.
Land, Mineral, Wildlife and Forest Conservation, which includes parts of the Interior and Agriculture Departments, recorded a 182-job loss to average 8,968.
General Medical & Surgical Hospitals' employment dropped by the smallest amount since 1995. The sector lost 144 jobs to average 2,171.
National Security employment decreased by 66 jobs to average 8,351. About half of these jobs are in El Paso County. Only civilian military personnel are included in the ES202.

The Federal Government operates eleven Retail Trade establishments in Colorado with an average of 1,623 employees. This was a decrease of 69 employees from the previous year. Nine of the eleven establishments and 1,439 of the employees are in El Paso County.
Employment in Administration of Human Resource Programs declined by 119 jobs to 1,510. Employment in Administration of Educational programs declined by 140 jobs to average 146 in 2000.
