At one time temporary help supply services drove the growth in this sector, but the force is now resident in Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Computer Related Services. Short-term projects abounded in engineering, consulting and research and development, pushing employment in Engineering Services (87) up by 120246. Social Services (83) added 581644 employees. Seasonal hiring for summer youth center programs along with increases in homemaker services contributed to the employment gain. Employment in Amusement & Recreation (79) fell by 3221. Losses were typical for this quarter as the ski season came to a close and seasonal help was terminated. Hotels & Lodging (70) suffered losses, down 948, although these also were seasonal and related to the end of the ski season. Personal Services (72) dropped by 773 employees. Losses were typical as tax preparation firms cut staff following the end of the tax season.

Employment in Services grew 4.6% up 25,563 over second quarter a year ago. Employment gains in this industry constitute one third of the state growth. Business Services, the largest sector of the Services industry, reported the largest increase in employment, up 12,965. The largest growing components of Business Services were Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Computer Related Services adding 6542 employees and Misc Business Services which added 4149 employees. Some of the categories included in Misc Business Services and contributing to its growth are guard services, demonstration services and telemarketing. Engineering (87) experienced the second largest sector employment increase adding 4156. Engineering services grew by 1731 employees with consultants and management consultants adding another 1098. Increased demand to outsource projects and business decisions has contributed to the steady rise in employment in these areas. Health Services (80) incurred the third greatest annual gain up 1880, with the majority of the expansion occurring in Offices of Doctors.
