QUARTERLY
TCPU employment rose slightly over last quarter for a gain of 0.9% and the addition of 1058 employees. Communication (48), up 1342 employees, showed the strongest gain. Telephone Communication generated almost 700 new employees over the quarter continuing its long-term history of expansion. Cable & Other Pay Television Services added over 500 employees due to unusually large staff increases predominantly in one large company. Trucking-Warehousing (42) grew by 726 employees. Gains appear to be seasonal occurring mainly in local trucking. Air Transportation (45) declined by 926 employees. Service contract changes and an airline closure centered in El Paso County subtracted 665 employees from scheduled air transportation. Seasonal service cutbacks in the ski areas and related to the ski season caused a drop of 256 in Airports, Flying Fields and Airport Terminal Services. Employment in Local Transportation (41) fell by 491. Losses were seasonal, the result of declining demand for shuttle service following the end of the ski season in April.
ANNUAL
Annually, TCPU employment grew at a rate of 4.9% adding 5767 employees. Communications (48) continues to be the strong growth leader in the industry with 6050 employees added since second quarter a year ago. The components reflecting the growth were telephone communications and cable and pay television services. Expansions in the cellular phone business and satellite television have impacted this sector. Local Transportation (41) added 386 employees. Most of the new employment was related to the movement of a corporate office to Colorado and service expansions for an emergency medical transport company. Employment in Air Transportation (45) fell by 968. Cutbacks in scheduled air transportation in El Paso County accounted for a loss of 660. SIC changes affecting about 150 and the termination of a large service contract in Airports, Flying Fields & Airport Terminal Services caused a drop of 168. Electric-Gas-Sanitation Services (49) declined by 237 employees. Losses were a combination of project completions in first quarter and layoffs in second quarter 1997.
