QUARTERLY
Government grew by 3.0% and added 9565 employees over last quarter. Local government had the largest employment gain rising by 5149. Within Local government General Government added 2932 employees to cover hiring for a variety of seasonal activities such as outdoor projects, youth programs and summer recreation activities. Amusement & Recreation employment advanced by 1053 as many metropolitan recreation districts hired summer help. Schools generated an increase of 574. Typically, Federal government employment experiences small changes. This quarter’s change was quite different though, up 2852. Undertaking of the 2000 Census with employment peaking in April at 7405 culminated in the addition of 2238 over last quarter. Seasonal hiring at the National Park Service added 304 to the increased count of federal civilian employees. State government employment rose by 1564. Education contributed 892 to the increase with gains almost equal between Colleges & Universities and Junior Colleges & Technical Institutes. Natural Resources seasonally grew by 543. The Judicial department added 224 with 136 added for expansions at the correctional facility in Sterling.
ANNUAL
Annually, Government employment rose 3.0% adding 9617 employees. The largest gain in government occurred in Local government up 5193. General Government, within Local government contains executive offices and general government offices and grew by 2082 employees. Increasing population has caused many municipalities to expand services and staff. Education was the second largest growing component of Local government adding 195 6. Health Services added 317 due to new hiring and the movement of municipal employees to hospital payroll for one large metropolitan hospital. Electric, Gas & Sanitary Services was up 242 due mainly to SIC changes from private industry for a number of special districts dealing with water supply and sanitation. Federal government reported an increase of 2844 employees annually. The increase resulted from the temporary hiring over the last two quarters for collection of the 2000 Census. Employment in State government rose by 1570. Increases in Education employment added more than half of the State gain rising by 838. Justice, Public Order & Safety had the second largest gain up 729 due mainly to gains occurring in Correctional Institutions.
