QUARTERLY The Manufacturing industry reported a quarterly gain of 733 employees rising 0.4% from employment levels established in first quarter 2000. The largest sector gain occurred in Stone-Clay-Glass (32) up 550 employees. Seasonal hiring for the production of ready-mixed concrete mix added 300. Seasonal gains also occurred in the production of Concrete Block & Bricks up 79 and Other Concrete Products up 78. Employment rose by 479 in Electrical Machinery (36). Electronic Components & Accessories added 200 due to an expansion by one firm producing Semiconductors & Related Devices and many firms making Electronic Connectors. Communications Equipment grew by 392. Employment in Fabricated Metals (34) rose by 266. Long-term expansions and some hiring for short-term production increases caused the employment rise. Seven sectors encountered employment declines over the quarter. The largest decline occurred in Printing-Publishing (27) with a seasonal drop of 345. The decline in Printing-Publishing followed a pattern of slowing typical to greeting card production. Non-Electrical Machinery (35) lost 279 as a result of employee transfers to businesses classified in Electrical Machinery and Services. ANNUAL Annually, Manufacturing employment rose by 0.3% adding 577 employees. Sector activity was mixed with 12 gaining employment and 7 declining. The largest change occurred in Electrical Machinery (36) up 1512 employees. Growth in Electronic Components & Accessories added 621. Companies producing Semiconductor & Related Devices generated the greatest subsector share of employment. Communications Equipment increased by 555. Most of the increase resulted from reporting changes necessitated by undercounting by a large employer. Fabricated Metals (34) increased by 548 employees. The largest subsector gains occurred in Misc Fabricated Metal Products up 142 and Fabricated Structural Metal Products up 123. Non-Electrical Machinery (35) incurred the largest sector employment drop, down by 1221. Computer Storage Devices experienced layoffs at a couple of large firms contributing to the drop by losing 917. About 189 were transferred to another business classified in Services and about 165 to Electrical Machinery. Transportation Equipment (37) lost 983 employees. Layoffs occurred over the course of the year in Guided Missiles & Space Vehicles & Parts.
