QUARTERLY
Wholesale Trade reported one of its strongest quarters of growth with an employment increase of 2425, up 2.3%. Durable Goods (50) realized its strongest ever quarterly gain adding 1793 employees. Within Durable Goods, Electrical Goods reported the largest subsector increase up 464. Increases were spread over a variety of employers centered in Electronic Parts & Equipment distribution, which includes communications related equipment. Seasonal demand for Lumber & Other Construction Materials added 381 employees. Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies incurred the third largest subsector gain up 337 employees. The bulk of its gain occurred in Computer & Computer Peripheral Equipment & Software, the result of big expansions at three large companies and some smaller increases. Machinery, Equipment & Supplies grew by 214. The largest portion of increase was seasonal, occurring in the distribution of Farm & Garden Machinery & Equipment.
Nondurable Goods (51) added 633 employees over the quarter. Misc Nondurable Goods reported the largest subsector gain adding 384. Its two largest growing components were Flowers, Nursery Stock & Florists’ Supplies up 160 and Farm Supplies up 140. Both increases were seasonal with gains due to Mother’s Day and the planting and growing season. The subsector Drug, Drug Proprietaries & Druggists’ Sundries reported the second largest increase up 182.
ANNUAL
Wholesale Trade experienced a gain of 4.2% over second quarter a year ago adding 4442 employees. Almost 90% of the annual industry gain occurred in Durable Goods (50) up 3974 employees. The distribution of Electrical Goods generated the largest subsector increase rising by 1618. Following the quarterly picture, gains were predominant in Electronic Parts & Equipment. Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies added 784 employees. Its growth was dominated by expansions in the distribution of Computers & Computer Peripheral Equipment & Software. The third largest growing subsector was Machinery, Equipment & Supplies up 421 employees. Industrial Machinery & Equipment added 236 employees and Construction & Mining Machinery & Equipment added 136. Hardware & Plumbing & Heating Equipment & Supplies was the only subsector to lose employment over the year. Small cutbacks in Warm Air Heating & Air-Conditioning Equipment & Supplies and SIC changes out of Hardware contributed to the subsector loss of 12.
Nondurable Goods (51) grew by 468 employees, annually. Expansions in Drugs, Drug Proprietaries & Druggists’ Sundries remained the mainstay of growth in Nondurable Goods adding 412 employees. Misc Nondurable Goods grew by 112 employees. Establishments engaged in the distribution of nursery stock, flowers and florist supplies provided the largest share of subsector growth.
