Construction grew 7.6% adding 7078 employees. Growth is slower than previous years due to the completion of Denver International Airport, the foul spring weather and a slowed housing market. Special Trade (17) gained 3963 employees. Concrete Work (177) showed strong activity up almost 1500 employees followed by Misc Special Trade Contractors (179) up about 950. Gains in Misc Special Trades were found in Excavation Work (1794) and Special Trade Contractors Not Elsewhere Classified (1799). Heavy Construction (16) added 2471 employees. Increases are down slightly but typical for this time of year. Employment in General Building (15) is considerably low gaining only 644 employees. A slowdown in Residential Building (152) was influenced by bad weather and a slow real estate market.
ANNUAL
The Construction industry reported the smallest annual growth since 1991. Employment rose 4.8% adding 4610 employees. All three sectors have been affected by the slowing. Special Trades (17) added 4459 employees over a year ago. Electrical Work (173) registered the strongest gain up almost 1200 employees. Plumbing, Heating & Air- Conditioning (171) had the second largest increase up about 900 employees. Masonry, Stonework, Tile Setting & Plastering (174), though up 454 employees from a year ago, experienced the largest contraction of employment. General Building (15) is up only 205 employees from a year ago. Typically gains have been running at least 1000 employees. Heavy Construction (16) fell 57 employees.
