Manufacturing employment grew 0.8% and added 1448 employees over last quarter. Transportation Equipment (37) incurred the largest increase up 451 employees. Contracts for work at three companies generated most of the new employment. Electrical Machinery (36) added 409 employees. Expansions occurred in a number of companies in Electronic Components & Accessories (367). Stone-Clay- Glass (32) which contains ready-mixed cement seasonally added 308 employees. Printing-Publishing (27) reported the largest employment decline. Employment dropped 506 employees. Decreases were seasonal but deeper than usual. Layoffs in Primary Metals (33) caused employment to drop 158.

Manufacturing employment rose 0.6% adding 1115 employees. Electrical Machinery (36) added 1926 employees due mainly to yearlong growth in Electronic Components & Accessories (367). Transportation Equipment (37) added 1706 employees. SIC changes into here covering about 475 coupled with expansions created the increases. Furniture (25) added 953 employees. Some growth occurred in Misc Furniture & Fixtures (259) but the majority of the increase resulted from SIC changes into the sector in January. Chemicals (28) fell 6588 employees. SIC changes out of this sector and into TCPU and Services in January accounted for most of the decline.
