The Mining industry suffered continued losses. Employment declined 1.7% losing 258 employees. Oil & Gas Extraction (13) bore the brunt of employment losses down 631. Lack of contract drilling work in Oil & Gas Field Services (138) caused most of the decline. Gains occurred in all other sectors of the Mining industry offsetting the losses experienced by Oil & Gas Extraction. Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) up 175 employees reflected seasonal gains. Sand & Gravel (144) showed the largest subsector increase as summer construction projects exerted demands for construction cement. Metal Mining (10) added 130 employees. The largest concentration of increases occurred in Ferroalloy Ores (106) due to expanded operations.

Mining employment dropped 5% over a year ago losing 776 employees. Sector activity was mixed. The largest declining sector was Oil & Gas (13) down 1303 employees. Reduced contracts for drilling occurring over the last two quarters caused the losses. Increased mining activity since January in Ferroalloy Ores (106) and over the year in Gold & Silver Ores (104) generated most of the new 365 employees in Metal Mining (10). Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) added 136 employees. Increases occurred in Crushed & Broken Stone (142), Sand & Gravel (144) and Misc Nonmetallic Minerals, Except Fuels (149).
