Services added 3943 employees rising 0.8% over last quarter. Business Services (73) incurred the largest increase. Amusement & Recreation (79) dropped 3857 employees. Seasonal declines are typical this time of year following the end of the ski season. The loss this year, however, is larger than normal but explained by the January SIC change for one ski area into here from Hotels & Lodging (70). Losses in Hotels & Lodging are nonexistant this year showing instead a gain of 192. Personal Services (72) is the only other sector to register a loss over last quarter. Employment dropped 951 due mainly to the end of the tax filing season as this sector contains tax preparation services.
ANNUAL
Since second quarter a year ago Services has added 27,899 employees for a gain of 5.9%. While these gains are still very healthy they represent a slowing from the 32,000 employee and 7% annual growth that has occurred since first quarter 1994. Moderated activity the last two quarters in Business Services (73) specifically Personnel Supply Services (736), which contains temporary help agencies, appears to be the culprit. Annual growth for Business Services stands at 9532 employees down from 14,000.
Health Services (80) added 4638 employees since last year. Growth occurred in Offices of Doctors of Medicine (801), Nursing & Personal Care Facilities (805) and Home Health Care Services (808). Other sectors with greater than 2500 new employees are Social Services (83) up 2933 and Engineering Services (87) up 2921.
