QUARTERLY

Wholesale Trade grew 1.5% over last quarter adding 1395 employees. Durable Goods (50) added 958 employees and Nondurables (51) 437. Increases in Durable Goods were strongest in Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies (504) up 215 employees and Lumber & Other Construction Materials (503) up 199. Small staff expansions in a number of businesses in Computers & Peripheral Equipment & Software (5045) contributed to the growth in Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies. Increases in Lumber & Other Construction Materials occurred in all subsectors and are mainly seasonal.

Growth in Nondurable Goods was confined mainly to Misc Nondurable Goods (519). Misc Nondurable Goods generated seasonal increases in Farm Supplies (5191) and growth in Misc Nondurable Goods Not Elsewhere Classified (5199). Losses occurred in the subsectors Paper & Paper Products (511) and Beer, Wine & Distilled Alcoholic Beverages (518). Respectively, losses were due to cutbacks and the undercounting of about 75 employees.


ANNUAL

Wholesale Trade added 4932 employees for an increase of 5.5%. Durable Goods (50) gained 3530 employees. All subsectors of Durable Goods expanded but Electric Goods (506) gained the largest number of new employees, up 1064. Growth took place over the year but was enhanced by the addition of 174 from Manufacturing SIC changes in January. Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies (504) also registered strong growth, up 752 employees, due to yearlong expansions

Nondurable Goods (51) added 1401 employees. Groceries & Related Products (514) up 624 employees and Misc Nondurable Goods (519) up 602 generated the largest share of the increase. Increases in Groceries & Related Products were primarily related to SIC gains in January. Growth in Misc Nondurables occurred in Farm Supplies (5191) and Misc Nondurable Goods Not Elsewhere Classified (5199) due to expansions.
