Seasonality influenced Agriculture employment which grew 37.1% over last quarter adding 7502 employees. All sectors increased as weather improved. Agriculture Services (07) added the greatest number of employees up 5110. About 4500 employees were added for lawn and garden care and about 500 farm labor workers for thinning and planting work. With the growing season underway employment in Agri Prod-Crops (01) jumped 2266. Over 1000 employees were added to Horticulture Specialties (018) which contains nurseries and greenhouses and almost 650 to Vegetables & Melons (016). While slightly better than last year, increases are typical for these subsectors during this time of year. Gains in the remaining sectors of Agriculture were minor with Agri Prod-Livestock (02) up 72 employees, Forestry (08) up 35 and Hunting-Fishing-Trapping (09) up 19.
ANNUAL
Agriculture employment advanced 6.8% over a year ago gaining 1773 employees. Agriculture Services (07), the largest sector of the industry, reported the largest annual gain up 893 employees. Strong and continued expansions in lawn and garden services, up over 700, contributed to the gain along with increases of around 300 in Veterinary Services (074). Growth in veterinary businesses has been steady over the year. Agri Prod-Crops (01) added 793 employees. Growth in Horticulture Specialties (018) and Vegetables & Melons (016) made up the bulk of this sector's expansion. Agri Prod-Livestock (02) added 91 employees and Fishing-Hunting-Trapping (09) added 2. The only sector to decline was Forestry (08) down 12 employees. Seasonal increases were not as high as a year ago although it appears that fewer are working more hours.
