FIRE employment rose 1.5% adding 1718 employees since last quarter. Insurance Carriers (63) showed the largest gain adding 493 employees. Expansions in Fire, Marine & Casualty Insurance (633) and Hospital & Medical Service Plans (6324) in the Balance of State added about 165 and 125 employees, respectively. Continued activity in the real estate market added 143 to Title Insurance (636). The second largest growing sector of FIRE, Credit Agencies (61), increased 349 employees. Real estate activity also contributed to the growth in this area as evidenced by the addition of 377 employees in Mortgage Bankers & Brokers (6162). Banking (60) added 288 employees. Short term expansions in Commercial Banks (602) accounted for most of the increase. Insurance Agents (64) added 196 employees, Security & Commodity (62) 174 and Holding & Investments (67) added 169. Seasonal slowing which typically occurs in second quarter following the end of the ski season left Real Estate with a small gain of 50.
ANNUAL
FIRE is up 4.8% over a year ago adding 5247 employees. Growth appears to be driven by the housing market as Mortgage Banking & Brokers (616), Title Insurance (636), and Real Estate Agents (653) reflect the strongest increases. Credit Agencies (61) which contains Mortgage Bankers & Brokers added 1351 employees. Insurance Carriers (63) added 1224 employees. Although increases in Title Insurance represented some of the annual gain in Insurance Carriers, growth was strongest in Hospital & Medical Service Plans (6324). Real Estate (65) increased 1144 employees with Real Estate Agents comprising about 75% of the increase. Security & Commodity (62) grew 739 employees. Over the year expansions in a few large firms created most of the gain. Insurance Agents (64) added 651 employees and Banking added 209. Holding & Investments (67) was the only sector to decline. Employment fell by 71. Losses were the result of January SIC changes out of the sector.
