Government employment rose 1.5 % over last quarter adding 4320 employees. Local government generated most of the increase up 4767. Gains were seasonal. Better than half of the gain occurred in General Government (91) as various jurisdictions added staff for summer projects. Almost 800 employees were added in Amusement & Recreation Services (79) for the operation of summer recreation programs. Federal employment rose 273 over last quarter. Although an increase of 94 employees were reported for the Air Force Academy, most of the gains in Federal government were due to seasonal staffing with the Forest Service and the National Park Service. State government fell 720 employees. Health Services (80) dropped almost 500 as a result of ceasing to report work study students. Schools (82) seasonally decreased by 677, and park services seasonally increased up about 900.
ANNUAL
Government employment fell over the year dropping 0.2%. Although employment in Local government increased, losses in State and Federal government left Government in the negative, down 601. State government lost 5125 employees over last year. The bulk of the losses occurred in Educational Services (82) in January when many state schools ceased reporting work study students. Federal government dropped 2144 employees. Over the year losses resulted from the closure of the Resolution Trust Corporation, decreases at Fitzsimons and cutbacks at numerous other departments. Local government added 6668 employees. Expansions in Educational Services up almost 5000 and General Government (91) up about 2400 caused most of the gain.
