QUARTERLY

A 0.3% gain in employment was recorded over last quarter with Manufacturing up 553 employees. Stone-Clay-Glass (32) reported the largest gain adding 442. Seasonal increases in Ready-Mixed Concrete (3273) and temporary projects in Concrete Products (3272) created a large portion of the gain. Transportation Equipment (37) reported a gain of 298. Better than half of its gain was due to seasonal increases and long term expansion in Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories (3714). Apparel (23) added 204 employees. Additions occurred in a number of subsectors, in a number of different business and were, for the most part, of temporary duration. Printing-Publishing (27) incurred the largest decrease. Employment fell 513. Losses were due to seasonal cutbacks in Greeting Cards (277) and business closures in Service Industries for the Printing Trade (279). Food Products (20) suffered the second greatest loss dropping 394 employees. Closures and cutbacks in Meat Products (201) and seasonal declines in Beet Sugar (2063) and Candy & Other Confectionery Products (2064) accounted for most of the decline within Food Products.


ANNUAL

Manufacturing employment grew 2.6% gaining 4984 employees. Electrical Machinery (36) up 1334 incurred the largest sector increase. Yearlong expansions in Semi-conductors & Related Devices (3674) and the incorporation of about 450 employees from January SIC changes contributed to the increase. Transportation Equipment (37) added 780 employees. Gains were the result of expansions this quarter and over the year of three major firms. Non-Electrical Machinery (35) added 746 employees. The largest growing subsector was Misc Industrial & Commercial Machinery Equipment (359) which increased almost 300 employees annually. Minor increases occurred in many firms. Food Products (20) was one of five sectors to decline over the year. It reported the largest loss dropping 510 employees. Cutbacks in Beverages (208) and cutbacks in Meat Products (201) along with the closure of one large plant caused most of the Food Products decline. The remaining sectors with losses were Primary Metals (33) down 83, Misc Manufacturing (39) down 66, Textiles (22) down 70 and Petroleum Refining (29) down 22.
