QUARTERLY

Mining employment rose slightly over last quarter adding 70 employees for a gain of 0.5%. Sector activity was mixed. Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) incurred the largest gain up 132 employees. Gains were seasonal due to the increased demand for sand and gravel for cement and construction work. Metal Mining (10) employment grew adding 41. Increases were strongest in Gold & Silver Ores (104) as corporate office staffing was expanded. Oil & Gas Extraction (13) remained unchanged gaining only 1 employee over the course of the quarter. Subsector activity also showed little change. Coal mining (12) reported the only loss. Employment dropped 105. Closure of one mine and cutbacks at another generated most of the employment drop.

ANNUAL

Employment in the Mining industry fell from a year ago dropping 1043 employees or 7.1%. Losses occurred in Oil & Gas Extraction (13) and Coal Mining (12). Oil & Gas Extraction lost 576 employees with decreases occurring in all subsectors due to lessened drilling activity. Coal Mining dropped 531 employees. Closures and cutbacks over the year effected employment in this sector. Although Copper Ores (102) lost employees in first quarter of 1996, and Ferroalloy Ores (106) suffered small cutbacks this quarter, gains in Gold & Silver (104) due to corporate expansions caused Metal Mining (10) to show a gain of 60 employees. Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) remained virtually unchanged as did its components. Overall, the sector gained 3 employees.
