Services employment grew over last quarter adding 8175 for a gain of 1.6%. Growth in Business Services (73) up 7096 employees accounted for more than 80% of the industry=s quarterly gain. Temporary help agencies (736) generated the largest share of increase within Business Services followed by Misc Business Services (739), which contains telemarketing firms, and Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Related Services (738). Health Services (80) up 928 employees was the second largest growing component of the Services industry. It=s major growth was found in Home Health Care (808) and Offices of Doctors (801). Social Services (83) added 630 employees. Summer staffing and increased grants to non profit agencies contributed to the growth. Only two sectors declined over the quarter: Amusement & Recreation (79) and Personal Services (72). Seasonal closures of ski areas caused employment to drop 2499 in Amusement & Recreation. Seasonal layoffs following the end of the tax season caused most of the decline of 817 in Personal Services.
ANNUAL
Services added a healthy 27,576 employees over a year ago for a gain of 5.5%. Better than half of the industry growth occurred in Business Services (73) up 14,213 employees. Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Computer Related Services (737) was the largest increasing component of Business Services followed by Misc Business Services (738), which contains telemarketing, and temporary help agencies (736). Health Services (80) up 2749 workers was the second largest growing component annually as well as quarterly. Within Health Services, Offices of Doctors (801) reported the greatest expansion up more than 1000 over the year. Increased demand for Home Health Care (808) generated work for more than 900 new employees. Amusement & Recreation (79) registered the third largest gain, up 1798 employees. Legal Services (81) was the only sector to decline over the year. Employment dropped 113 due to cutbacks, realignments and closures occurring fourth quarter 1995 and first quarter 1996.
