QUARTERLY
TCPU employment was flat dropping 9 employees for a quarterly change of 0%. Sector activity, however, was mixed with gains offsetting losses. Trucking-Warehousing (42) added 474 employees over last quarter. Increases appear to be seasonal due to summer construction hauling and moving. Communication (48) added 239 with increases reported in both the telephone and cable industries. Transport Services (47) up 135 employees showed a mix of expansions and seasonal increases. Air Transportation (45) dropped 573 employees over the course of the quarter. Seasonal slowing following the end of the ski season contributed to the decline, which was centered in Scheduled Air Transportation (4512). Local Transportation (41) declined, dropping 406 employees. Declines in this sector were also related to the end of the ski season as demand for transport to ski areas fell.
ANNUAL
Annual growth in TCPU slowed, with a modest addition of 2902 employees. The percent gain of 2.6% is the lowest reported since 1992. Moderated expansions in Communications (48) coupled with cutbacks in Electric-Gas-Sanitary Services (49) affected the industry slowing. Communications added 1218 employees over the year and Electric-Gas-Sanitation Services lost 1508. SIC changes in January of 5500 from Trucking-Warehousing (42) to Air Transportation (45) cause annual gains to appear extreme. Air Transportation shows an annual gain of 5771 employees. Trucking-Warehousing reported a loss of 3408 employees. Seasonal gains this quarter pared down the loss associated with the January SIC change. Local Transportation (41) rose 528 employees. Increased demand for transport to and from ski and gambling areas created much of the gain.
