Wholesale Trade rose 1.8% over last quarter adding 1703 employees. Increases occurred in both components of Wholesale Trade. Growth in Durable Goods (50) was strong with employment gaining 1057. Growth was driven by expansions in Lumber & Other Construction Materials (503), Electrical Goods (506) and Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (508). Lumber & Other Construction Materials rose 348 employees. The movement of a large sales office from out of state to the Metro area contributed to the gain. Electrical Goods added 278 employees. Expansions in a handful of companies in Electronic Parts & Equipment Not Elsewhere Classified (5065) accounted for the increase. Increases in Machinery, Equipment & Supplies, up 217, occurred in all of its subsectors except Service Establishment Equipment & Supplies (5087). Nondurable Goods (51) added 647 employees over the quarter. All subsectors of Nondurables rose except for Farm Product Raw Materials (515). Misc Nondurables (519) generated the bulk of the employment gain up 436 employees. Increases were primarily seasonal occurring in Farm Supplies (5191), Flowers, Nursery Stock & Florists Supplies (5193) and Nondurable Goods Not Elsewhere Classified (5199).
ANNUAL
Wholesale Trade grew 2.3% over a year ago adding 2228 employees. Durable Goods (50) added 829 employees. Increases were strongest in Electrical Goods (506) up 602 due to expansions particularly in Electronic Parts & Equipment Not Elsewhere Classified (5065) and Lumber & Other Construction Materials (503) up 509. Nondurable Goods (51) gained 1399 employees. Over the year expansions in Drug, Drug Proprietaries & Druggists Sundries (512) up 376 showed the largest gain. Groceries & Related Products (514) up 341 reported the second largest increase. Gains were centered in Groceries & Related Products Not Elsewhere Classified (5149). The opening of a prepackaged food distribution center this quarter added about 60. Paper & Paper Products (511) added 235 employees since last year. About 100 of the increase is attributed to SIC changes in January.
