QUARTERLY

The Construction industry reported the strongest industry gain for the quarter jumping by 11,481 employees. In terms of percent Construction had the second largest quarterly increase up 10.7 %. Special Trades generated the largest share of new employment up 7140. Growth occurred in all subsectors of Special Trades but was greatest in Concrete Work (177) which grew by 2261 employees. Misc Special Trades Contractors (179), which contains foundation and excavation work incurred the next largest increase gaining 1428 employees. Plumbing, Heating & Air-Conditioning (171) seasonally grew by 1174 employees. Favorable weather contributed to the start-up of many projects in Heavy Construction (16) adding 2752 over the quarter. General Building (15) added 1589 employees. Residential construction gained 917 and nonresidential building rose by 608.


ANNUAL

Employment in Construction grew by 7938 over a year ago up 7.1%. Special Trades (17) garnered 5497 new employees. Up by 1646 employees, Plumbing, Heating and Air-Conditioning (171) registered the largest subsector increase. Gains in Masonry, Stonework, Tile Setting & Plastering (174) were second with an increase of 1013. Most of this gain was due to drywall and insulation work which is included in the classification. The third largest growing subsector was Electrical Work (173) up 997 employees. General Building (15) added 2131 employees. The growth was split between nonresidential building up 1022 employees and residential up 979 over the year. Nonresidential building strength occurred in the Denver Metro area while strength in residential construction occurred in the balance of the state. Heavy Construction (16) grew by 310 over last year.
