Government employment rose 1.8 % since last quarter adding 5415 employees. All three sectors of government increased. Local government followed traditional second quarter trends adding 4841 employees. Typically, many municipalities hire in second quarter to operate summer recreation programs and perform outdoor maintenance activities. Federal government added 302 employees. Layoffs, prevalent over the last couple of years, have kept Federal government from reflecting any quarterly increase since second quarter of 1995. Increases this quarter are the result of seasonal hiring for the National Park Service and the Forest Service. Fitzsimmons Army Hospital reported some losses as the facility moves toward closure. State government added 272 employees. Seasonal hiring of about 400 by Natural Resources for staffing at state recreation facilities offset minor losses in many other areas of State government.
ANNUAL
Government employment is up 1.6% over a year ago having added 4681 employees. Local government registered the strongest growth gaining 5429 employees. Increases in education represented the bulk of the gain adding more than 3500. Local government operation and administration also expanded over the year adding more than one thousand employees. State government rose by 305 employees. employees. Most of its growth occurred in Justice, Public Order & Safety (92) due to housing expansions at a few correctional facilities catering to youth and adults. Federal government employment fell over the year dropping by 1052. The largest block of losses occurred at Fitzsimmons Medical Hospital due to cutbacks preceding its closure. The United States Air Force Academy also experienced losses as did National Park Service, the Department of Energy and the Bureau of Reclamation.
