Manufacturing employment rose 1.1% over last quarter adding 2124 employees. Transportation Equipment (37) reported the largest increase up 438 employees. New contracts and expansion by two employers created the impetus for growth. Stone-Clay-Glass (32) grew by 400 employees. Most of the gains were seasonal in nature due to increased summer demand for concrete products. Non-Electrical Machinery (35) added 337 employees. Increases were strongest in Computer & Office Equipment (357) and Misc Industrial & Commercial Machinery & Equipment (359). Computer & Office Equipment growth appeared in computer storage devices and peripheral equipment manufacturing. Chemicals (28) added 213 over the quarter due to expansions occurring primarily in Drugs (283). Three sectors lost employment over the quarter: Printing-Publishing (27), Rubber-Misc Plastic (30) and Primary Metals (33). Losses in Printing-Publishing down 50 were seasonal while losses of 50 in Rubber-Misc Plastics were the result of a return to normal production schedule. Primary Metals decreased by 16.
ANNUAL
Manufacturing employment grew 3.4% adding 6597 employees. Non-Electrical Machinery (24) was the largest increasing sector and only one of two sectors to add more than 1000 employees over the year. The bulk of the gain in Non-Electrical Machinery, up 1931 employees, occurred in the manufacturing of computer and office equipment and was the result of a mix of SIC changes in January and production expansions. Transportation Equipment (37) reported the second largest gain, up 1506 employees. Expansions in Motor Vehicle Parts & Accessories (3714) and Guided Missiles & Space Vehicles & Parts accounted for the sector gain. Increases in Guided Missiles & Space Vehicles & Parts, up 1067 employees, may be overstated. The third largest growing component, up 517 employees, was Chemicals (28). Gains were confined to expansions in the manufacture, research and development of companies classified in Drugs (283). Leather (31) reflected the largest employment decrease dropping 145 employees over the year due to layoffs.
