Employment in Wholesale Trade rose over last quarter by 1.5% adding 1515 employees. Both Durable (50) and Nondurable Goods (51) increased gaining 953 and 562 employees, respectively. Durable Goods experienced growth in most of its subsectors. Lumber & Other Construction Materials (503) reported the strongest increase, up 215, due to seasonal pressures on supply houses during this time of peak building and repair. Misc Durable Goods (509) reported the second largest gain, up 173, due to seasonal demand for pool supplies and equipment, golf and bicycle items. Some temporary staff expansions occurred in Scrap & Waste Materials (5093).
Nondurable Goods accumulated most of its quarterly gain from Misc Nondurable Goods (519) up 396 employees. The wholesaling of farm supplies, nursery stock and ice produced seasonal employment gains. Some expansion was reported in pet supplies and art goods.
ANNUAL
Wholesale Trade grew 4.8% over a year ago adding 4665 employees. Durable Goods incurred the majority of the employment gain having added 3884 while Nondurables added 781. Within Durable Goods, Professional & Commercial Equipment & Supplies (504) showed the largest increase, up 1376, due to expansions related to the sales of computer and peripheral equipment. Electrical Goods (506) had the next largest increase, up 873. Gains resulted from expansions in the wholesale distribution of items such as computer boards, semiconductors, fibre optic systems and satellite dishes.
Nondurable Goods (51) gained 781 employees. Over the year expansions in the distribution of Drug, Drug Proprietaries & Druggists Sundries (512) contributed 350 to the gain. The second largest increase occurred in Groceries & Related Products (514) up 223 with most of the gain concentrated in the packaging and distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables.
