QUARTERLY
On a quarterly basis employment in the TCPU industry grew slightly adding 898 employees for a gain of 0.7%. Sector activity was mixed with four sectors adding employment and five sectors losing employment. Trucking-Warehousing (42) experienced the largest expansion over the quarter up 647 employees. Despite the closure of a premier long distance hauler during the quarter this sector realized some seasonal growth connected to summer moving and Mother’s Day deliveries. Communications (48) added 510 employees. Most of the increase was due to staff expansions in establishments offering message communications other than telephone and radiotelephone. Water Transportation (44) seasonally added 91 employees as the summer boating season came to fruition. Transport Services (47) rose by 63 employees due to expansions by travel agencies and seasonal additions for summer tour operators. The industry’s greatest loss occurred in Local Transportation (41) down 235. Losses were seasonal driven by reduced demand for ski area transport and schools during summer break. Air Transportation (45) fell by 101 due to seasonal cutbacks for ground service at ski destination airports.
ANNUAL
Employment growth in TCPU remains strong up 11,608 employees over a year ago for a gain of 9.5%. Annual increases, however, are inflated because of SIC changes into the industry in January covering about 4600. The largest sector gain occurred in Communication (48) up 9009 employees. About 4100 of the gain resulted from SIC changes. Expansions in radio and cellular telephone service, other message communications service and cable television shared the rest of the increase. Air Transportation (45) incurred the second largest employment gain up 1574. Expansions of airline service by large established companies necessitated increases in hiring. Transport Services (47) is reported up 580 from a year ago. SIC changes moved about 550 from Services into this sector in January. Trucking-Warehousing (42) increased by 434. Losses in long distance trucking caused by a closure were off set by gains of over 400 in local trucking and the addition of 110 in general warehousing. Electric-Gas-Sanitation Services (49) was the larger of the two declining sectors. A loss of 53 occurred when a company merger and subsequent streamlining caused layoffs.
