The Construction industry seasonally increased over the previous quarter by 4.8% adding 7898 employees. The number of new employees added was typical for this time of year. The Special Trade (17) sector generated the largest growth spurt up 5566 employees. Within Special Trade the subsector, Electrical Work, incurred the largest increase gaining 1802 employees. Almost three fourths of the employment gain was reported in Metro Denver. Plumbing, Heating & Air-Conditioning was the second fastest growing subsector increasing by 1525. Misc Special Trade Contractors registered the third largest increase up 699. Gains were driven by work expansions in excavation and foundation digging. General Building (15) added 1463 employees over the quarter. Residential Building contributed the largest gain to the sector adding 900. Nonresidential Building increased by 416. Heavy Construction (16) added 869 over the quarter. Highway & Street Construction grew by 377. Heavy Construction except Highway & Street Construction rose by 492 with activity dominated by the construction of water and sewer mains, pipelines and communication and power lines.

Construction was the second largest growing industry in Colorado adding 16,352 employees over third quarter a year ago for a growth rate of 10.6%. Growth in the Special Trade sector, up 12,891, comprised almost 80% of the industry growth and incurred a 12.3% annual gain. Remodel and subcontracting work consistently cause this sector to outpace other construction categories. Subsectors within Special Trade experiencing large employment increases were Electric Work up 3899 and Masonry, Stonework, Tile Setting & Plastering up 2298. About 80% of the employment in each of these two categories occurred in the Metro Denver area. General Building (15) employment grew by 2066. Residential Building added 1496 employees with 1150 attributed to the construction of single-family homes. Nonresidential Building employment rose by 347. The Heavy Construction (16) sector reported an annual gain of 1396 employees. Gains were exclusive to the subsector Heavy Construction except Highway & Street Construction and influenced by strong activity in water, sewer, pipeline and communications and power line construction.
