TCPU employment moderately expanded over the quarter gaining 2579 employees for an increase of 1.9%. The largest sector gain occurred in Communication (48) up 1917. Hiring by businesses engaged in the operation of Cable & Other Pay Television Services added 812 and those providing Telephone Communications added another 566. Telegraph & Other Message Communications grew by 505 employees. Reporting inconsistencies may compromise employment in the Communications sector. The second largest gaining sector was Trucking-Warehousing (42) up 709 employees. Expansions in local trucking contributed 606 new employees and long distance trucking added 212. Ground courier services suffered a decline of 130 due mainly to the closure of one large firm. Transport Services (47) rose by 176 employees. One employer picked up more contract work expanding its employment by 73 in packing & crating. Arrangement of transportation for freight and cargo added 55 and arrangement of transport for passengers added 61. Electric-Gas-Sanitation Services (49) suffered a loss of 241. Completion of a couple of contracts for clean-up projects at Rocky Flats caused most of the decline.

Annual growth in TCPU was 3.6% adding 4913 employees. The largest sector increase was reported in Communication (48), which rose by 2546 employees over third quarter 1999. More than half of the increase, 1675, occurred in businesses classified in Telegraph & Other Message Communications. Most of the expansion took place within two large firms. Cable & Other Pay Television Services saw an employment increase of 923. Communications Services Not Elsewhere Classified was the only subsector to decline over the year, falling by 510 employees. Contract completions for a firm operating outside of the United States caused most of the annual loss within this subsector. Air Transportation (45) had the second largest employment increase, rising by 1895. Air passenger transportation rose by 1373 employees with most of the growth reported in Denver County due to increased business operating out of Denver International Airport. Electric-Gas-Sanitary Service (49) suffered the largest decline falling by 942 employees. A corporate office closure, streamlining of staff by a new utility owner, project completions at Rocky Flats and SIC changes in January for about 275 caused the sector loss.
