QUARTERLY

Construction grew 7.1% adding 7181 employees. Special Trade (17) added 4024 employees. Within Special Trade, Concrete Work (177) added the largest number of employees up 982. Misc Special Trade Contractors (179) incurred the second greatest increase up 788 employees. Excavation Work (1794) and Special Trade Contractors Not Elsewhere Classified (1799), which contains a large share of asbestos abatement contractors, were the leading sub- sectors. Heavy Construction (16) gained 2013 employees. Highway & Street Construction (161) increased 947 employees and Heavy Construction (162) added 1066. Growth in the subsector, Heavy Construction, was propelled by work in Water, Sewer, Pipeline & Communication & Power Line Construction (1623). General Building (15) added 1143 employees. Residential Buildings (152) incurred the largest share of quarterly growth up 723 employees and Nonresidential Buildings (154) added 427.


ANNUAL

Annual growth in the Construction industry slowed this quarter growing a mere 4.3% adding 4463 employees. Activity was mixed with Special Trades (17) adding 4585 employees and Heavy Construction (16) 275. General Building (15) dropped 398 employees. Industry slowing was affected mainly by the decline in growth in General Building. Residential Building (152) reflected minor expansions over last year, up 95 employees, but losses occurred in both Operative Builders (153) and Nonresidential Buildings (154) down 197 and 296, respectively. The largest gaining components of Special Trades were Concrete Work (177) up 1195 employees, Electrical Work (173) up 967 and Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning (171) up 867. Growth in Heavy Construction was found exclusively in Highway & Street Construction (161).
