Government employment declined 3.7% dropping 11,167 employees. Losses are seasonal and related to the cessation of school for the summer. Local government dropped 9602 employees. Losses of about 12,000 employees in Educational Services (82) were offset by temporary summer hiring in Executive, Legislative & General Government (91) and Amusement & Recreation Services (79). State government fell by 1784 employees. Employment declines in State government can also be attributed to temporary seasonal losses in Educational Services. Federal government added 220 employees. Seasonal increases for the US Forest Service reported in Administration of Environmental Quality & Housing Programs (95) generated most of the quarterly gain. Employment gains of about 100 were reported by the USAF Academy in El Paso County.

Government employment grew 2.0% over a year ago adding 5616 employees. Local government added 6809 employees. About 4100 of the gain in Local government occurred in Educational Services (82). Executive, Legislative & General Government (91) contributed another 1700 to the gain. State government grew by 1017 employees. Educational Services was its largest expanding sector up about 500 employees. Justice, Public Order & Safety (92) and Administration of Human Resource Programs (94) each added around 200 new workers over a year ago. Employment in Federal government declined 2210. The closure of Lowry AFB, layoffs at Resolution Trust Corp, the Bureau of Reclamation and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Center contributed to the decline.
