Employment gains occurred in the Mining industry this quarter. The industry added 441 employees up 3% over last quarter. Vigorous activity in Oil & Gas (13) up 310 generated most of the employment gain. The impetus was increased drilling activity in Oil & Gas Field Services (138).
Metal Mining (10) added 110 employees. Expansions in Gold & Silver Ores (104), up 48 employees, and short term projects in Metal Mining Services (108), up 42, created most of the sector gain. Seasonal fluctuations in Sand & Gravel (144) which prepares product for cement and construction purposes added most of the 94 employees to Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14).

Mining employment dropped 405 employees down 2.6%. Sector activity was mixed. Oil & Gas (13) registered a loss of 1010 employees. Although drilling activity increased this quarter, severe slowing in first and second quarter of 1995 in Oil & Gas Field Services (138) caused this subsector to drop 532 employees. SIC changes in January along with cutbacks caused Crude Petroleum & Natural Gas (131) to decline by 489 employees. Metal Mining (10) added 449 employees. Most growth occurred in Ferroalloy Ores (106) followed by Gold & Silver Ores (104). Mining & Quarry Nonmetal (14) added 233 employees. The largest contributing subsector was Sand & Gravel (144) with 84 new employees.
