The height of the summer tourist season was reflected in the cyclical employment increase. Retail employment increased 10,827 or 3.1% over last quarter. Eating & Drinking (58) registered the largest increase up 4783 employees. Seasonal hiring outside the Metro area was the basis for most of the gain. Food Stores (54) added 1223 employees. Two chains opened new stores in the Metro area contributing to the increase. Most growth, though, occurred outside the Metro area as many quick stops and grocery stores add workers during the vacation-tourist season. Misc Retail (59) added 1073 employees. Subsector activity was strongest in Misc Shopping Goods Stores (594), particularly Gift, Novelty & Souvenir Shops (5947), and Nonstore Retailers (596). General Merchandise (53), up 1011 employees, added four new stores since mid-second quarter. In addition, employees were added for back-to-school and warehouse staffing in anticipation of Christmas.
