Services grew 2.4% adding 12,272 employees. Increases of this magnitude are typical for this time of year. Factors influencing seasonal increases are summer vacationing and recreation and staffing for summer projects and vacationing employees. Business Services (73) added 5790 employees over last quarter. More than half of the increase occurred in temporary help agencies. Other significant subsector gains were made in Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Computer Related Services (737) and Detective, Guard & Armored Car Services (7381). Protection services increase in the summer during the outdoor concert and sports season. Hotels & Lodging (70) added 3857 employees and Amusement & Recreation (79) 879. Golf, gambling and white water rafting are some of the activities generating employment in Amusement & Recreation. Losses occurred in Social Services (83) down 380 and Educational Services (82) down 310 as many day care and school facilities closed for the summer. Losses in Personal Services (72) down 253 resulted from layoffs following the end of the tax season.

Since third quarter a year ago Services added 28,146 employees growing 5.8%. Business Services (73), the largest increasing sector, added 11,478 employees. Computer Programming, Data Processing & Other Computer Related Services (737) was the largest increasing component of Business Services followed by Misc Business Services (738), which contains guard services and telemarketing, and Personnel Supply Services (736).
Health Services (80) is up 3494 employees. Growth occurred in doctor’s offices and nursing and personal care businesses. Engineering Services (87) up 2658 reflected yearlong growth in Engineering Services (8711) and Management & Public Relations Services (874). Hotels & Lodging (70) added 2438 employees. Social Services (83), up 2323 employees, expanded throughout the year but did pick up about 300 in January from SIC changes. Auto Repair Services (75), up 2226, showed yearlong growth but was impacted by the advent of the new emissions testing program in the Metro area implemented in January of 1995.
