FIRE employment rose 1.6% adding 1840 employees over last quarter. Insurance Carriers (63) incurred the largest industry increase adding 516 employees. Expansions by two major health insurance providers and a number of firms in Fire, Marine & Casualty Insurance (633) generated the majority of the gain. Title Insurance (636) which had been an active contributor to employment gains now reports minor activity, up only 19 employees over last quarter. Real Estate (65) reported the second largest quarterly increase adding 500 employees. Seasonal hiring for summer property maintenance and swimming pool operation by management companies contributed to the gain. Insurance Agents (64) added 212, Banking (60) added 206 and Security & Commodity (62) 196. Increases in Banking were centered in Functions Related to Depository Banking (609) which covers check cashing companies, clearinghouses and money order facilities.

Employment in FIRE rose 5.1% over a year ago adding 5580 employees. The largest increase occurred in Insurance Carriers (63) up 1508 employees. Service and corporate expansions in Accident & Health Insurance and Medical Service Plans generated more than half of the sector gain. Credit Agencies (61) added 1149. Growth was dominated by yearlong hiring in Mortgage Bankers & Brokers (616) due to the high demand for financing and refinancing. The healthy Colorado economy reflected in low interest rates and high discretionary income impacted employment gains in the two following subsectors of the FIRE industry. Real Estate (65) up 816 was influenced by the strong housing market and subsequent staffing increases in companies involved in real estate sales and managing. Security & Commodity (62) reported a gain of 804 employees. Expansions in a few of the larger firms created most of the gain.
