QUARTERLY

Government employment slipped 3.9 % since last quarter dropping 11,565 employees. Local and State government declined over the quarter and Federal government grew. Local government lost the largest number of employees falling 10,884. Losses were tied almost exclusively to summer closures of schools and offset somewhat by seasonal increases for summer recreation programs. State government dropped 704 employees. Losses in State government were also related to summer school closures. Increases for the Colorado State Fair and summer hiring for parks and recreation counteracted some of the decline. Federal government rose by a mere 24 employees. Seasonal hiring for National Park Service, the Bureau of Reclamation, and Forest Service balanced the closure of RTC, cutbacks at Fitzsimmons Medical Center and summer layoffs for the National Civilian Community Corps.

ANNUAL

Government employment decreased over a year ago losing 999 employees down 0.3%. State and Federal government employment dropped while Local government rose. Employment in State government dropped 4045. Most of the loss occurred in education in January of this year as a result of discontinuing to count work study students as employed. Federal government dropped 2340 employees. The bulk of the losses resulted from the closing of the Bureau of Mines in first quarter, cutbacks until closure this quarter of the Resolution Trust Corp and cutbacks at Fitzsimmons Medical Hospital, Peterson Air Force Base and the National Civilian Community Corps. Local government added 5493 employees annually. Growth was equally divided between education and general government expansions.
